Understanding dBm
dBm (decibel-milliwatts) is a logarithmic unit of power, commonly used in radio frequency (RF) engineering. It expresses power level in decibels (dB) with reference to one milliwatt (mW). Because it is logarithmic, it can represent both very large and very small power values in a more manageable range of numbers. This is particularly useful in RF work where power levels can span many orders of magnitude.
Formulas:
- P(W) = 10^(P(dBm) / 10) / 1000
- P(dBm) = 10 * log10(P(W) * 1000)
