Bits vs. Bytes

It's important to understand the difference between bits and bytes when dealing with data transfer rates. One byte is equal to eight bits. Internet speed is typically measured in bits per second (e.g., Mbps), while file sizes are measured in bytes (e.g., MB).

This distinction is a common source of confusion. For example, a 100 Mbps internet connection will download a 100 MB file in more than one second, because it's downloading 100 megabits, not 100 megabytes, per second. This calculator helps clear up that confusion by allowing you to convert between both types of units.
