Decimal vs. Binary Prefixes

You may have noticed that your 1 Terabyte (TB) hard drive only shows up as about 931 Gigabytes (GiB) in your operating system. This is because manufacturers often use decimal prefixes (powers of 1000), while operating systems typically use binary prefixes (powers of 1024).

  • Kilobyte (KB) = 1000 Bytes
  • Kibibyte (KiB) = 1024 Bytes
  • Megabyte (MB) = 1000 KB
  • Mebibyte (MiB) = 1024 KiB

This calculator allows you to convert between both systems to clear up the confusion.
