Understanding Your Calorie Needs

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, one of the most accurate methods for estimating your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs at rest. It then multiplies this by an activity factor to determine your total daily calorie needs (maintenance).

From there, it estimates the calories needed for weight loss or gain. A deficit of about 500 calories per day typically leads to about 1 pound of weight loss per week, while a surplus of 500 calories leads to a gain of 1 pound per week. These are estimates, and individual results can vary.
