Understanding Gear Ratios

Gear ratio is a direct measure of the ratio of the rotational speeds of two or more interlocking gears. In general, when dealing with two gears, if the driving gear (the one that applies the initial force) has more teeth than the driven gear, the driven gear will rotate more quickly, and vice versa. This calculator determines the gear ratio and the resulting output speed based on the number of teeth on each gear and the input speed.
