Understanding Bend Deduction

When sheet metal is bent, the material stretches on the outside of the bend and compresses on the inside. Bend deduction is the value subtracted from the sum of the flange lengths to determine the flat pattern length. It compensates for the stretching of the material.

  • Bend Allowance: The length of the neutral axis within the bend.
  • Bend Deduction: The difference between the sum of the flange lengths (measured to the apex) and the final flat length.
  • K-Factor: A ratio that represents the location of the neutral axis relative to the material thickness. It varies based on material, thickness, and bending method.
